my turbo has sat in the cellar for the last 2 yars as I find it mind blowingly boring.

if i cant ride I use a gym, more variety, and while many of the exercises may not improve my cycling directly they do improve my fitness which will therefore improve my cycling

30 minutes on a bike, 30 minutes on a cross trainer and 15 minutes on the rower - crawl back to changing room!

using my turbo a lot for specific interval stuff at the moment. HIIT is part of it, turbo copes with all I can give in 15 second sprints, still has more resistance if I need it, but 45 mph is fast enough at the moment! Just riding on the turbo would drive me bonkers, but following a specific planned session is do able 3 or 4 times a week.

If all you do at the gym is ride an exercise bike, then I'd say, go for it.

But not if there are other things you do there.

I've don't get to go to the gym much at the moment due to other commitments, but when I do go, I enjoy using the treadmill (don't like running outside), rowing machine (don't have anything similar elsewhere), and weight machines (good as I want to build up strength). Plus I really enjoy going to the gym anyway. The only thing I rarely use are the bikes. Why? Because I ride a real one and much prefer it!

I've had a turbo trainer for 10+ years. It tend to get brought out for periods of a month or two (when time is really tight or when the weather's really bad) and then put away again. I don't suppose it's had that much use overall, but it's there when I want it and I certainly don't regret buying it.

Decent deal on at Decathlon at the moment: http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/found-a-bargain-do-tell.16260/post-2094182 (towards the bottom of the page).
