You'd be mad to ride bare-kneed in this weather.
Over time, the cold temperature will knacker the synovial fluid in your knee joints.
Keep your knees covered and warm!

That could explain why my left knee has started playing up  .I have been putting it down to an old football injury. I am going to start riding with the strapping on for a few days see if it help.

Shorts here still. I'm lucky my legs never seem to feel cold and shorts are comfortable on the bike. My hands though are another matter- bloomin' freezing- could do with some really decent gloves.

it needs to be really hot for me to keep knees uncovered. i want to be riding still when i'm 80, and keeping my knees in good nick is fairly important in that regard…

There's two things you need to do (from my personal experience):

1) make sure you ride with your arms well insulated, not just your torso - if your arms are warm all the way down to your wrists, then your hands will be warmer.

2) Get yourself a pair of these: http://www.wiggle.co...source=googleps I bought a pair last year and they are the best winter gloves I have ever owned! They're not waterproof, but being made of neoprene (same material as a wetsuit), it doesn't matter.

EDIT: re sizing of the gloves, I have a hand-span of 9 3/4 inches and the extra-large fits me nicely.

First time ever this year I have invested in some cycling tights.(ooer)

I had knee problems so I stopped playing football in 1991.
