hi,

I'm 5'7 and struggle with bib-shirts as often the leg can be a little too long, and in some cases it's way too long - notably Rapha, I could never buy any of their shorts, even if I wanted to.

For those in similar situations, what do you do? Are there any brands to hunt out, or any ways where I can get. Shorter leg length on my shorts/longs.

Bib-shirts!! Are they what we used to call romper suits?

(I've yet to buy cycling shorts, but am certainly leaning in the direction of bib shorts).

I'm 5' 6 I don't have much trouble, though my legs are fairly long for my height, 31".
Got bibs by Altura, Santini, Ale and Nalini.
Have a look at La Passione, I'm thinking of getting a pair from there next.

Shorter than average at 5 foot 8, with very short legs and I have never had a problem with bibs (use assos, rapha, castelli).

What size are you buying? Most manufacturers just make them in a range of sizes based primarily on height (I.e. An XL is based on someone being tall) rather than waist - so, if for example, you are short and round, the option of an XL short that will deal with the round will end up with a leg that is designed for someone much much taller. There is still the assumption from many of the more established companies that anyone into cycling is going to be rake thin, whereas the reality is somewhat different.

I find assos tend to be on the short side, so may be the direction to head (old S5s used to be sold in short and long leg versions - I have a pair of the short leg ones that are totally retro with the cuff half way up my thigh). New S7s are pretty short still.

The problem I find is that trousers come in 29" leg and larger, I'm a 27". Over the years I've paid a fortune getting trousers shortened until I found a couple of suppliers who do sell true 27" leg trousers. All my cycling 'longs' have elastic at the bottom of the legs to stop them dragging on the ground.

Impsport and made to measure works well for me. I have many other makes that have had to be turned up. By a specialist in sports wear adjusting.

Okay, I'll try smaller sized shorts to try and match my height, but earn looking at size charts they rarely mention the leg length. My Northwave shorts are great, but the pad is a little lacking, but some others are sat on my knees.

Another question would be, is there much of a difference in pad between men's and women's shorts.

I'm in the same 27" boat.
I find dhb large are ok in the leg. I need large for my shoulders and chest.
Normal shorts- I cannot find any for sale at present that will end above my knee. They're all below the knee and look voluminous!

I'm 5' 5'', 74kg and 29'' leg I got some dhb Active Padded Bib Short in small they are ok but could have done with xs, I've found over the years that the Italian gear is smaller, but more expensive, I like the dhb gear its good quality at a reasonable price my only criticism is the sizing is BIG......

How long should shorts be? I've noticed that they are being worn longer this year. I'm 5'5", 61kg, 27" leg and most DHB shorts are fine, recent bibs from Aldi good length too. I have big (small?) problems with bib longs. Plain bottomed ones with zips are all too long. Only ones that ever fit have stirrups. Problems with finding longs that fit in general.
edit: BTW GAP stock 27" inside leg trousers - or at least you can get them online.
