I have decided to take the plunge and go clipless for my daily commute. What pedals and shoes would you recommend? My commute is approx 8 miles through city centre.

Thanks

Shimano SPD pedals. Shoes have recessed cleats making them easy to walk in. You're likely to be clipping in and out if you wait at lights or the traffic is slow, so double sided entry pedals make that easier.

If you want to go SPD (where the cleats are recessed from the sole so you can walk in the shoes, as opposed to SPD-SL where the cleats aren't recessed making walking much less comfortable), then commonly recommended pedals are Shimano PD-M520 which have clips on both sides of the pedal, or Shimano M324 which have clips on one side, platform the other.

Apparently Lidl start their bike-stuff sale tomorrow, so if you want a cheap pair of SPD-compatible shoes then you might try that, otherwise I think shoe choice is a really personal thing so try to find somewhere to try them on.

Thanks, I think I'll go to lbs this weekend and go and try a few pairs. I don't want to pay loads, thinking upto £50.

I have been using SPD's on the commute with no problems and as said easy to walk in too. In the last few days I have been using SPD-SL's on the new which are harder to get in to and out of and are a bugger to walk in. But they are or seem to be more comfortable on the feet while riding.

When I decided to go clipless approx 18 months, I wasn't sure I would adapt so bought some cheap shoes and pedals from Lidl... cost me something like £15 for shoes (currently on sale for around £18 btw) and £12 for their pedals.

Shoes are still going strong but pedals have worn out and I've since changed them to Shimano M520's from here... although they were only £17.50 when I bought them about 6 months ago.

I haven't looked back since going clipless btw and can't wait for my shoes to wear out so I can get a 'proper' pair. Can't justify changing them otherwise as they're fine for my 8 mile each way commute.
