Shoe stuck on pedal - help!

A colleague has his shoe stuck to his pedal (we are at work). I think a bolt came from the shoe as it now spins freely on the pedal and won't unclip.

We have a small Park Tools toolkit at our disposal but no other tools except pliers and an adjustable spanner.

How do we get the shoe off the pedal? I have been Googling but all I get is "take a pair of pliers to it and stand well back :|"

Once off I'll remove the cleat from the pedal and he can ride home unclipped?

Photo's are of the "other" pedal, the underside of the pedal with the stuck shoe and the back of that pedal.

What a fun* problem!
Ultimately you should be able to break/tear the shoe off the second bolt, then ride home on the flats, but let's try and avoid that!

Quick thoughts:
- As the shoe spins freely on the remaining bolt, can you unscrew that one by turning the shoe in the appropriate direction?
- Can you get at the other bolt via the inside of the shoe, by removing insoles/plastic midsoles/footbeds, unscrew that as well, and get the shoe off that way?
- Can you get at enough of the cleat between the shoe and the pedal to get the adjustable on it and unclip it by rotating that as you would if you foot was in the shoe?

*By which I mean 'not fun' for you guys..

Thanks ColinJ

I was wrong about the toolkit make by the way... it's a "LifeLine Workshop Tool Kit" (http://www.wigglestatic.com/images/lifeline-95100.jpg)

I can probably borrow a screwdriver from one of the maintenance guys I think so if I were able to release it with a screwdriver... where am I putting it and what am I twisting?

Push a screwdriver in and twist to release the cleat. It's fiddly, but I've done it in the past.

(Beg/borrow/buy the screwdriver!)

Yes, should be. You might need to take that reflector off first.

Thanks everyone!!!

We went with the screwdriver option and someone with previous experience saw us and was able to ping the shoe off the pedal.

One bolt is indeed missing (the owner of the bike has now confessed to loosening the bolts on purpose to give a bit of float - doh!)

Ace this place innit!

Thanks

Glad you got it out, i have had to leave the shoe on the bike and unclip the the non natural foot before now till i got home and managed to tear the shoe off by rotating further than normal to get it off.

It happened to @Scoosh once, IIRC we loosened the retetion and prised it out with a multi tool.

I have no idea what HLaB did to remove my clipped-in shoe ! It was p****** with rain (real monsoon stuff - the roads were under 6" of water)), we had taken refuge in a bus shelter - and I found I couldn't unclip ! @HLaB did something magical when I took the shoe off, the rain relented and we carried on ... I think he did what was suggested above - loosened the tension screw and twisted the show out. I was very glad for HLaB's experience and knowledge. :thanks:
