I'm also based in the northwest and found limited choice, I tried buy a bike near Chorley, Winstanleys in Wigan, Halfords, Evans etc.
In the end I bit the bullet and bought online from Sigma Sports, they had some good deals on shoes, ended up with some SPD SL Fizik with 40% off.
Was very surprised the actual fit was very similar to my nike trainers, my SPD Specialized shoes feel like they are two sizes bigger..
