shimano triple 10speed compatability

I've decided to make my croix de fer as best as possible. So I snagged some 6703 shifters on ebay and bought a 6703 chainset and bottom bracket from merlin on sale. I now have to complete the groupset and I'm thinking about going with a mountain bike rear mech so I can get the bigger ratios for touring (doing some in September. What mountain bike rear derailer would you guys recommend? What is compatible with the shifters?

Deore XT rear mech is excellent, make sure it is not the rapid rise version

I have the 9 speed version on my tourer.

You can get any current 9 speed Shimano mtb rear mech you like, rapid rise or otherwise, but not the 10 speed models because they require a different cable pull and so wouldn't index properly with your shifter.

That will definitely not work with your rear shifter.

Why? It says:

3. Dyna sys 10 speed rear dérailleurs cannot be used with 9 speed shifters. Road 10 speed dérailleurs can be used with 9 speed shifters.

Since "road 10 speed derailleurs can be used with 9 speed shifters", and since 9 speed rear mechs will work with 9 speed shifters, they will work with 10 speed road shifters (since it goes without saying they would work with road 10 speed derailleurs).

The two most likely to fit the bill are the XT RD M772 Shadow 9 speed, or the SLX M662 Shadow 9 Speed. SLX is slightly more robust, and depending on taste, has a blockier look and feel ... it's "all mountain" rather than XC. They're usually about a tenner cheaper. Cheapest deal around at the moment that I can find is Chain Reaction, XT are £47.99 and SLX are £39.99. You need to specify SGS (long cage) not GS (med cage)
