I've just changed from an old set of St-5500 triples to a new* ST-5600 set, and have noticed a considerable difference in the front shifting. I'm finding it quite annoying, but I wonder if it's normal and I just have to adjust my shifting habits to match it.
(new*=unused but presumably not brand new from manufacturer)
On my old left shifter, I had 4 positions (clicks) that released more or less equal amounts of cable, so that I had 1 position on the small chainring, 2 on the intermediate and 1 on the large.
With the ST-5600 triple, I still have 4, but the top two are extremely close together and both sit on the large chainring - despite a lot of time spent adjusting the tension etc I can't alter this. In fact the release click from the top (ie. most tense) position only releases a tiny amount of cable.
From what I can understand on the techdocs (which aren't crystal clear to me) I wonder if this is the 'trim' element, and if I should just expect 1 position on each chainring, and consider the 4th - tensest - position as a little extra.
I'm still using a FD-5500 derailleur, but don't know if that makes any difference - surely the derailleur just does what it's told by the shifter.
Any thoughts on whether this is normal, or if I should be able to change it, are welcome.
