One of those mysteries of the universe, and is no way worth arguing with the missus about 'cos its an argument that cant be won.

Re Gaz's comment about stiffer shoes, never used top end MTB shoes but am I right in thinking if they have a carbon sole they will be as rigid as road shoes with same sole? The Northwave's look like their road shoe but with grippy bits on, presume pull-up is the same if sole is rigid and I dont rip me foot out of the pedal??

The sole will display comparable stiffness, I suppose the other factor though is the size of the cleat, and hence the amount of surface engagement 'twixt pedal and cleat.

I far prefer Look Keo (similar to the SDP-L) pedals to SPDs. The Keo pedals are noticably stiffer, lighter. However, I have SPDs on the fixie and MTB for the simple reason that it impossible to walk in road cleats.
