Be careful taking it to bits, it will most likely end in tears !
8 speed shifters will indeed pull a 9 speed mech over 7 speeds. 7 speed is 3.1mm spacing, 8 is 3.0mm spacing. Will work fine.
Dura Ace 8 speed mechs/and shifter pull a different ratio so won't work unless you bodge the cable routing - they had a different pull.
