@Blue Hills all the Shimano ones I did had little rivets that you grind the head off and punch the rivit through than work the sprockets off gently especially with 9sp ones the spaces tend to brake easy it doesn't matter if you have a few spare though which you will have once you have done it once or twice.
Whether its easier just buy off the shelf, it's not so clear cut, as some options are not readily available I made up an 8sp 13/15/17/19/21/23/25/28 on a 52-42-30, the sprocket range is not a common one as most 8/9 sp start at 12 or 11, so I used a 7sp 13 which gave me 105" gear opposed to a 50x12 of 110" (so much for my single step gearing idea) there were a couple of other sprockets I the 28th or at least the way the stepping went, I would need to look at ranges to say fully what I did now, as it is sometime ago.
