Don't forget, specs on other parts of the bike will be upped - wheels/stem saddle etc - It's worth the slight increase in groupset prices, but as it's off-the shelf, you won't be able to spec the better groupset without all the other upgrades.

You would from Epic cycles, they'll build it to whatever specification you want. Not necessarily the cheapest, but buying the right thing first time is usually the best value. And they're nice folks, with plenty of bikes to play on and some good local routes.

I don't know much about Shimano road groups, I understand the only advantage of Ultegra SL over Ultegra is weight saving. The advantage of Ultegra over 105 is more noticeable on some components than others, someone like Epic will know and you don't have to stick to one group. A friend has a bike with Ultegra hubs on handbuilt wheels, Ultegra shifters and 105 everything else, which he's convinced is the best value/performance combination.

A very sensible way to kit a bike, rather than sticking rigidly to one groupset. In my experience it is the shifters that make all the difference with a drive train, very few people would be able to tell whether their mechs and cassette were from the bottom or the top end of the range.

Don't forget that unless you are serioulsy racing the difference between groupsets will most probably make little or no difference at all - except to the manfacturers' profit margins of course.
