Cheers Vantage these are the kind of suggestions I’m looking for to remedy the problem.

I have let in soak in GT85 but still the same I’m afraid.

Re cable slack, is there any while trying to change down or does the cable remain taught throughout each shift?
Have the jockey wheels been replaced in the correct order? The top one usually has more float (side to side play) than the bottom.
Does the rear mech spring back from the big sprocket to the smallest under its own tension?

if the cable is outside the frame , hook seat on washing line , get someone to spin crank while you hold the bare cable tight and shift gears up and down - you will be able to feel it either pull tighter or slacken , if it doesnt slacken without pulling a bit then problem is shifter end if it does then its rear mech end ?
bike stand is nearly as good as a washing line !
