I want to give my Merida a full strip down service when it's next in the shop, I have a few bolts that are rusting etc I removed the offending ones and applied some grease to the threads, the LBS said I need to wash the bike less! haha or dry it off better.

My next question is, I would like to upgrade to the newer R7000 105 groupset, there is some life in the current setup, but this is more a want than a need upgrade but it seemed to make sense if I go for the full strip down service, also the R7000 is on sale at the moment.

Is R7000 much better than the 5800?

I doubt you would notice much at all over and above what you would get with new cables. However, as you say it is a want rather than a need. I can think of better ways of spending money though.

ok I will have another think on how I will proceed, I replaced the wheels the other year thanks to a pothole so I was assuming a groupset upgrade made some sense, especially as many are on sale at the mo, and I want to have a full strip down service.

I can tell you that R7000 is very good and I prefer it to my old SRAM Apex setup. It changes much more smoothly and the shifters require only a light touch. I upgraded to it when my Apex stuff was well and truly worn out and broken (but I'm making comparison to the Apex before the shifter disintegrated obviously).

Whether there is any/much difference between R7000 and 5800 though, I have no idea. I'm a bit doubtful seeing as they were both 105 but that may be flawed logic.

If you change the bolts to titanium ones you won't have to worry about rust.

this as well, I will speak to the mechanic about this as well, as I don’t want seized bolts.

I have removed wire brushed and lubed the offending ones for now, tbh my Merida is hung in the shed unless I get some dry days and better weather, the Ribble is bomb proof the weather causes that thing no issues haha
