About to purchase some new pads for my bike (Spesh Secteur) and having one of those silly moments of doubt - have never bought replacement calliper pads before

Koolstops salmons seem to be the way to go, so would these be the right ones?!

Koolstop Supra 2

However Sheldon B seems to indicate the MTB branded Koolstops are the best and can be used on any type of brake, so could I go with these instead???? i.e these:

Koolstop MTB / BMX pads

Many thanks and apologies for thicko questions

I might be wrong here but I think that the pad shape is wheel diameter dependant. You may end up with two much or not enough of a curve on the pads.

There certainly not thicko questions, especially when it involves safety and spending some hard earned cash.

I use MTB salmon Koolstops on my hybrid with 700c wheels, I also read Sheldon's advice and I have had no problems.

The second set you stated are for BMX's.

NOOOO!!!

Those are both wrong! They are for cantilever or V-brakes.

I dont have time to get a link to the right ones, but thems is definatly the wrong `uns!

EDIT: They should look more like this...

http://www.dotbike.com/p/5993

Once you have the right brake pad holders you can replace just the pads from then on, usually about £8 a pair.

The Supra 2 pads can be used in cantilever brakes which dont have the removable/replaceable cartridge pads. I think the low end Shimano brakes (sora and below) come fitted with this type of 1 piece pad where the bolt is moulded directly into the pad.

Assuming this is whats on the OP's bike They should fit, and will probably be a vast improvent over the original crappy Shimano pads.

However..... if it was me, I'd take the opportunity to dump the single piece pads, and move up to the replaceable pads and holders like the ones above ( http://www.dotbike.com/p/5993 ). They offer more flexibility and cheaper pads. The cartridge holders should be a direct replacement for the one-peice jobbies.

Kestevan, I'm on an entry level Secteur with completely unbranded brakes, so you're right in that they currently have one piece blocks which are fairly chocolate fireguard like in their usefulness.

Will have a look into the replacement cartridge type.

Please note that the link I posted isn't a recommendation for (or against) dobike, I have not used them. They were the first ones I found with a picture.

Thanks Paul - and don't worry - managed to find them a little cheaper elsewhere anyway - will report back how I get on!

Hoping for the same improvement in braking performance; coincidentally also on a Secteur. The original one piece pads are pretty useless and also give the impression that they are grinding the rim away with every pull of the brake lever. I have Koolstops on my Tricross and what a difference they make!

I found the Koolstop RE460s a couple of days ago on dotbike and ordered 2 pairs. Couldn't find them ANYWHERE else. Usual suspects like Evans, Wiggle and ChainReaction don't seem to stock them. Even Google was no help, so was just wondering where you found them cheaper Twizit .

Is it the RE460's which you use on your Tricross?
