It's several lumps of crystalline rock, clamped into a metal form. Look at it that way, and all the taint is gone... Its up to them to make the ring 'work' this time, just as it would be with a new one. I suspect they'll live in a house people have died in, but that's not an issue.

As an ardent recycler I say better reuse than buy a new one, with stones probably hewn by people with less than enjoyable working conditions...

Well then what he could of done is had the stone re-set in a different ring which would still have the link to his mother without the direct reminder.

I can understand (if it's correct) that it's important to Willy because his mom can't be there and this is a part of her. Sentimental, but this might outweigh the other issues about the ring.

I'm sure that's quite likely to be his reasoning (to use a possibly rather generous term). I didn't mean to imply that William was offering the ring in bad faith. But the entire purpose of rings is symbolic, so it's a bit tricky to forget the other stuff. Perhaps she doesn't want to upset him by pointing it out, or isn't any sharper than he is and hasn't noticed...

The "forgetting" was an affectation, intended to convey indifference. But then I suspect you know that. Had I bothered to use her name, it would have been "Ms. Middleton", on account of never having met the woman and not knowing her marital status.

In which case it has nothing to do with you or I or anyone else, if they are happy with it.

As for rings being symbolic, yes, they are, but they doesn't mean any history is set in stone, to use an appropriate phrase, Symbols can have their meaning changed you know...

Of course they can, but not by individuals naively wishing meanings away. Diana bought into the romantic symbolism, with an entirely different notion of what the engagement/marriage meant to that held by her husband, his family and his mistress.

I really couldn't give two hoots about the royals, but for what its worth, I don't think Chuck & his family set out to hoodwink Di... just had blinkers on.

I can understand if the original engagement/marriage was happy and successful, but (it appears to me), that this ring was practically 'tainted' from the word go.
but, in this case, the tragedy of her death seems to have superseded the misery of her marriage. (our Royal Correspondent writes...)

It is an odd thing, though. Perhaps it's a welcome relief from the notion that all love is perfectly new?
