Commuting in all weather, I think I'm doing well to get 1000 miles out of a 10-speed chain.

lets not forget it depends what you ride "in". Lubricating a chain with high quality british mud will drastically shorten its life and that of the teeth it runs on. a road chain may last a few more miles than a crosser or mtb for that reason. (assuming correct servicing of each)

I have just put a brand new 8 speed chain onto a part worn xt(r?) 8 speed cassette i had in the parts bin. shifting fine. (on the OH bike)
