I wrapped a piece of masking tape around the post.

There's very little clearance, so best to leave a gap, rather than a full circle.

The tape may ruck up a bit as you push the post in, but the clamp ought to grip better.

Tricky one to solve. Is it a steel frame?

It might be worthwhile replacing the bolt if the threads are in any way damaged or worn. Be very careful not to overtighten as you can deform the frame and seatpost.

Are you absolutely certain that the seatpost is the correct size? You could try the next size up but don't force it in.

Personally, I would just shim it with a bit of coke tin and trim off the excess.

Grease is needed, not just for anti-corrosion purposes but also to stop water getting into the frame. It is worthwhile to remove and re-grease seatposts and quill stems once a year.
