I've got a new Flyer and on the seat post there's a set of numbers that count down vertically, starts at 10 and goes down, I've got a lot of seat post showing and I'm down to number 8, I presume it goes down to 0, I haven't had the seat post right out. Now is this decorative or is it done to show how close you are to the maximum amount of seat post showing? Its not something I've come across before and an internet search didn't bring any information up.

It's so you can reset the post to the correct height if you remove it.

The marks are largely pointless. If you want to re-set your seatpost after removing it, just wrap a piece of electrical tape round it where it meets the top of the seat collar, before tasking it out of the frame.

On a black seat post I normally use a dab of Tipex, but I can see the numbers being useful for setting the post back to where you had it.

The numbers - a bit like the tippex - will wear off over time. A bit of electrical tape tends to stay put.

Tipex can be redone easy, but not the numbers, the flaw in the idea, but once its set up I wont disturb it very often.

The marks are a great idea because it saves having to wrap scabby bits of tape around your seat post to mark its position.

As others have said, it's to give you a quick and dirty idea of seat height when changing from riding styles
