Real men don't use digital. They read vernier scales. Up your game man.
I was taught to read vernier scales as an apprentice. I lost my calibrated vernier caliper when trying to take it onto an aeroplane, so bought myself a new digital version. Damn thing is next to useless as every time I wanted to measure with it the battery was flat :cursing:.
So went and bought an old-school vernier caliper which always works when I need it.

My advice was directed at the OP, who sounds as if he needs it. Mine's a vernier. OT, I still miss my circular slide rule, which neatly fitted in my school jacket pocket while others had their 11+" long one sticking out of their bag. Both gave the same full 10" calculation distance.

I am suitably impressed. My "anti digital" advice was actually a dig - unfortunately via you - at the tendency here to always pre-face vernier/caliper with digital. Search for caliper and you'll find that the recommendation is usually to get a digital caliper/vernier. It is something that I've noticed and irks me a bit when I'm feeling grumpy. As @Oldfentiger pointed out, the damned digital things work with batteries. The vernier scale is so elegant and has stood the test of time without batteries, obsolescence or language barriers. It takes no more than ten minutes to learn to read the vernier scale. There are plenty of on-line tutors for learning this useful skill. And don't even get me started on households that don't have at least one vernier caliper handy - I consider them disfunctional. Just look at the OP. Sorry OP.
