take your time and get it done up the way you want - whether rustoration or re-paint. if the time and bit of extra expense isn't a factor, you can start with the rusted patina look, but if that doesn't appeal after a while, you can sandblast, prime and re-paint later. Sounds like you want the rustoration look...

They still make an identical product, new, so it's not exactly rare. I'd get Mercian to refurb the poor thing. Inject the tubes with Dynax S50 or similar when you get it back.
