Satnav apps for Microsoft smartphones

Hi anyone had experience of purchasing or downloading navigation apps(Microsoft smartphone compatible) and using in France. I'm planning a short visit to in late summer in visit my G grandfathers' war grave in northern France, close to Arras. I don't use such things riding locally, but with timescales I need something reliable and not too battery draining.

HERE Maps is free, with free offline maps. You may already have it on your phone if it is old enough.

I used it on my Windows Phone and it was the first thing I looked for when I switched to Android.

It is very good, downloading offline maps is great and all it needs is a quick fire up online on wifi now and again to get updates.

For me it beats Google and Apple mapping into the dirt.

I just download the relevant bit of Google Maps. It's stored for 30 days after download. You can then track your location on the maps. What it doesn't do (which others may, I'm not sure) is offer routing data-free. So if you want to be offered a routing while out and about this may not be the most suitable method. However, if you just want to see where you are and be able to follow your location on the map as you move about, it's fine for that

It not only tracks your ride, it does AUDIBLE directions and you can upload your ride to Strava (costs about £1.50)

I love this app and it has never let me down

I wouldn't worry too much about not using data when roaming in Europe these days. O2 is £2/day for 120 text, 2 hours of calls and "unlimited" data. That's well worth it compared to being lost.

On my Windows Phone I use Here Maps, as recommended above, by @shouldbeinbed and @Milkfloat , having downloaded the maps over wifi. Works a treat.

For tracking/recording rides on WP I use Cycle Tracks GPS as recommended by @Rooster1 above

So I have nothing new to add

Edit: In desperation to add something new, I'd point out that for live tracking using Windows Phone, I use Glympse. I know that's not what you asked, but it makes me feel a bit less useless.

Here maps won't work with win10 mobile as of June 30th.. but it still will with Win8 mobile.

The win10mobile built in map app works just as well

.. and following GPX routes and live tracking this https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/store/apps/ride-journal/9nblggh3vvtr IMO is better than Cycle Maps GPS or will be when it's fully developed.. it works with speed/cadence sensors (and such like) so it's turbo trainer friendly too

Although you have the app installed, you will not have the mapping data offline. I suggest you download these over wifi.
