I feel sorry for the guy, often these actions are an attempt to do something worthwhile in an otherwise humdrum existence. They are also known to be displacement activities for those with other pain in their lives.

Years ago I lived in a scummy bedsit in a huge house in South Kensington.
One other occupant of the house was an elderly Spanish lady who would talk to Diana and the boys for hours on the pay phone in the hall, having never put a coin in the slot. Although she would talk in both English & Spanish alternating sentences, she was always happy, never any trouble and we would help her up the stairs with her shopping.
