...I have some cycle shorts. The fact that I'm doing a 5 day ride...
Excuse me if I teaching granny to suck eggs, but you'll need fresh shorts every day.

That doesn't necessarily mean five pairs, but you'll need to be able to, at least, rinse them out in hot water.

Warm, dark and sweaty is just what bacteria love and putting stale shorts back on is a sure way to pick up an infection!

Believe me, these questions do go through my head. So thanks for the tip.

That could be a scientific experiment to see what's growing in them by the end of the ride :S

It's not what's growing on the shorts that I would be concerned about! xx(

hehehe. Maybe take some canesten also.

Silly question number 20. I've heard that Vaseline is the key. Is this true? SHould I cover myself in it around that sorta area, etc.

this is like channel 4's embarrasing bodies.

Commando? Absolutely: wearing anything under your shorts just adds one layer to chafe against another and defeats the object of the exercise.

I don't wear any kind of ointment up to 200km, but that's because I have gradually put the miles in season my backside like an old oak sideboard!

Vaseline will do at a push, but Sudocreme/Bepanthene [sic?]/nappy rash potions are better because of their anti-septic properties; but a proper chamois cream is best of all, as it is specifically designed for the purpose.

PS If you also choose to use a warming liniment on your legs, make sure you apply the chamois cream before the liniment and not the other way around; don't ask me how I know this...

ohh. Just consulted the Urban Dictionary and understand now (am a bit slow in this respect). Have to admit I thought it was an odd suggestion that men like to wear womans clothing under their cycle shorts (commando knickers). Each one to themselves. PMSL

LOL ... I guess you wouldn't last too long out here then ... It is nothing to go two weeks between washes and if you got so much spare water to wash your knicks you are not on your bike. IIRC 11 days, two pairs of knicks no washing is my "record" and heck I am still alive . Fourteens + days coming up including carrying water for five of those days (read at least 30 litres). None of that is going towards washing clothes trust me.

If by chance I hit a water hole I will rinse clothes but otherwise nothing happens until I hit a town with a washing machine. On the hand I try to where possible have a bush shower if there is a waterhole or other substantive water supply such as rain tank at a campsite. In those situations I use 200 to 300 ml of water warmed up to wipe myself down. That is a luxury on some days.

That certainly puts things in perspective.

Spoon just fitted. Will let you know how I get on.

I'm sure the one supplied with my Giant isn't right. Had a go on it on the turbo last night and my bum ached after hardly any time. Never had that on any of my other bikes.
