This really applies more to road bikes where the weight of the rider is more evenly distributed between feet, hands, and backside.

The OP is riding a mountain bike, and I doubt she is riding in the attack position, so more weight on the saddle.

A cheap solution could be a padded seat cover - I've seen them in supermarkets for under a tenner.

Nooooooo! A padded cover is going to WORSEN the problem. The OP needs a good women's saddle like a Charge Ladle with padded shorts and plenty of time for her body to get used to them, oh and check the saddle position, height and angle by posting a sideways picture of the bike on here.

Terry saddles are designed by women for women. They are shorter and broader in the rear than a man's saddle. For myself , a narrow, hard saddle is best because all my weight is resting on my sit bones, with little if any pressure on the soft tissue between those bones, under which are nerves that should not be damaged. Too wide a saddle, no matter how hard, chafes the inside leg. I wear padded mtn bike short liners only with britches that have seams in that area. Otherwise its cotton underwear or, in winter merino long johns. Riding in summer is more a problem than winter due to the heat and friction riding can generate. I like gusseted loose nylon shorts and trousers that allow for air flow and are not so hot. Having the correct distance between pedal and saddle can affect comfort as well, as can saddle height and how far you are bent forward when riding. It is well worth the effort to ride on a saddle that is so comfortable you rarely think about it.
