Sad news indeed, but I cannot allow the notion that Bagpuss was the best ever tv animal to go unchallenged. For my money it has to be either Roobarb or Danger Mouse.

Roobarb was definitely madder. Bagpuss had a certain je ne sais quois though, even for me and he wasn't around until I was 11.

I always liked the Marvellous Mechanical Mouse Organ meself. And The Clangers, well, they're an institution.

When I was a kid, we had a Betamax video with Bagpuss, Ivor the Engine and the Clangers on. Unfortunately, our VCR got nicked and by that stage you couldn't buy Betamax machines any more. One of my more traumatic childhood memories...

Mind you, I bet the burglar was well chuffed.

Yup, I was woken by the sound of a Clanger on the Today programme and without hearing the story guessed what it was. A great man. He and Peter Firmin pretty much made my childhood. I was lucky to meet Peter Firmin a couple of years ago, and thank him, Oliver should have been there but was ill.

Pure genius, and the most wonderful comforting voice - I heard it descibed once as like warm milk, which is spot on.

I may have to knit a Clanger now. Wearing a black bow perhaps. I have a pattern.

I had visions of Clanger pall-bearers talking in hushed and droopy whistles...

The other great voice from that era is Brian Cant.

Oh no. I have an image in my head now, of a sad Clanger, that's almost too painful to bear....

Brian Cant yes, he's the other half of my childhood. Him and Johnny Ball.
