I did a sportive today. My third ever and first for a couple of years. I too was amazed at the amount of gel and bar wrappers on the floor. At races you get a brief and told you'll be fined for dropping litter. Consequently it rarely happens and if it does it's usual without intent (shovelling gels in at 25mph is something of an art before shoving the wrapper up your shorts leg/ battling with your number to get it in your back pocket).
Anyway, despite a lovely ride in the country with some lovely company, I'll not be rushing back to a UK sportive. Gel wrappers aside, I saw all manner of bad riding. And besides, with a couple of exceptions, I remain unsure as to the purpose of the UK sportive (aside from giving cyclists a bad name).
