I always put mine on flash to conserve battery. In fact if it had a "no light/ radar only" mode I'd use that for daytime use - but it doesn't.
Like you, I'd swear it sometimes sneakily changes modes when I'm not looking, as sometimes I stop and it's on solid light.
Check your head unit - you may have it set to override the unit for the light setting. In normal use mine always reverts to the setting it was on when it was last used, regardless of when that was or whether it was charged in between uses.
Edit to add: I have my light set to turn on or off with the head unit, if you fully power it down between uses then you might find you need to re-set your preferred mode.
