I rather doubt he is racist.

I think it is generally accepted that he's bright and clever.

Let's imagine for a mo he is racist.

Being clever, would he then have made such a comment knowing how it would be read/what the consequences would be?

I don't care at all for the dodgy sight of folks trying to build their own egos and media presences on the back of this. Used to be way too much of that sort of thing on here.

As has been said upthread, danny baker has a lightening mind that sometimes runs ahead of him.

I think he is very probably too bright for his bosses and is suffering for not playing "the game"/ their games.

ffs he immediately deleted it, apologised and called himself stupid.

Don't recall the bbc ever calling out the queen mum"s racism, about which there are some very convincing tales.
The issue isn't whether Baker is a racist or not. The issue is whether he posted content that could reasonably have been expected to cause offence to black people.

Surely the answer to that is "yes, it could reasonably have been expected to cause offence"?

In answer to your point on the Queen Mother :She wasn't an employee of the BBC which in itself places a greater responsibility on the employer

He's got form for being a petulant gobshite. My schadenfreude is well satisfied at seeing him sacked, again.

He's definitely a motor mouth. I find it too much tbh but that's just my sensibilities. He's no idiot though, on the contrary, he has a very quick mind. That is why I think it disingenuous in the extreme for him to claim he didn't see the racist inference in that pic.

Er you laughed at the initial tweet but think he should have been sacked for it?

Sounds tortured to me.

The trick is to move on..

He's posted that pic loads of times in the past, once when Jacob Reece-Mogg's son was born (well one of them anyway).

I've listened to DB for years, I love his quick wit, and sense of humour. He's always been a bit of a loose canon and hence his time at the BBC was always likely to be limited. In all the years I've listened to him, I've never heard any hint of racist views. Why would he suddenly think, right, time my mask slipped, time I threw away my career, I'll put up a very offensive image so at last everyone can see what a racist bastard I really am. I just don't buy it.

It was absolutely the right call to sack him, it was a hugely offensive picture. Intent to offend ?- I don't think so. Naïve and very stupid, most certainly yes. I suspect he may have had a shandy too, not that that's any excuse. I genuinely believe he was clumsily trying to make the same point he made with JRM's baby- a comment on privilege, and in the case of the royals the absurd circus surrounding them. (I had no idea the princess is mixed race either- and thought it was the other one who just gave birth).

One thing I do know for sure, I'm not listening to 'Saturday bloody Live' instead on Saturday mornings now for love or money.

FWIW, I don't think he's racist. But I do think he's too switched on to not be aware that that picture could be perceived as such. I mean, monkeys and racism - where's he been if he's not sensitive to that particular trope? Maybe he did know he was playing with fire and it was deliberately provocative. Maybe it was a lapse of judgement or even a brain-fart moment. Whatever the reason, he messed up and won't look back on it as his proudest moment. The BBC had to sack him though.

Agreed on 'Saturday Live'. It's mind numbing cak.

he has specifically referenced this in his formal apology. My guess is he was too quickly looking for the gag, without engaging his brain.

"I needed no lessons on the centuries slurs equating simians and people of colour. Racism at it's basest."

In an age when policians seem totally unprepared to take any blame, it is a shame that someone who immediately holds their hands up, admits an error and tries to make amends get pilloried in the press. Is there no room for forgiveness? I hope he finds another job soon.

I think many people are forgiving, even if only in a 'there but for the grace of god' way etc. What would you have the BBC do though?

Fret not, he'll serve his term and be back in work somewhere. The apology will count.

Is someone who commits one clearly stupid, unthinking act that could be construed as racist a racist?

I would have hoped and thought that such a serious description would require more history of the offence.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record the issue for the BBC wasn't whether he is a racist or not. It's the inevitable reaction from black people (in particular but not exclusively) to depiction of a mixed race baby as a monkey

Had the BBC done nothing they would, quite rightly, have been pilloried and the mud of "supporting someone with racist views" would have stuck.

It's the reaction of people to the image that matters, not what Baker's intentions were when he posted the image
