Hey all,

My brother recently bought an android phone and was wondering whether there's an app that lets you plan your journey, then follows it with GPS as you go, telling you which way to turn etc?

Also, any input on the best cycle app to use to record mileage and your routes? He's tried Strava but noticed you have to pay to use all the features.

Any help appreciated.

EDIT:
I use MY TRACKS which records your route, not plan a route. Its good: moving speed, average moving speed, elevation, etc lets you export your ride in KML file. Like this:

I think the OP wanted to plan a ride and then be given directions satnav style, not just record the ride.

I use ridewithGPS to plan and this integrates with the CueSheet app on the phone. I got the pro version of CueSheet but I can't remember what features this gives, gets rid of the annoying ads for sure and adds voice guidance maybe. I think there was another app that I chose CueSheet over, because the other app that I can't remember wanted all sorts of permissions such as access to my contacts that I didn't want to give.

If you are prepared to build routes on a website rather than with an app, you can build courses on MapMyRide website that seems to have a decent feature set to me. Might be fiddly to use on a tablet or phone rather than a desktop computer. These can be exported as GPX files which can be used in a variety of third party apps, and possibly in cycling computers too. Though MMR app does not offer navigation, I find it decent otherwise.

Endomondo and strava you build the routes online then export the gpx files to your phone and open them with oruxmaps or bike hub app for the turn by turn navigation which is done via gps on your phone no Internet required. I found endomondo best as strava crashes a bit and misses out parts of the route occasionally. P's if he has got a galaxy s5 endomondo premium is free. Gpx viewer is also a good navigation app try them see what one he prefers.

Hope this helps I did spend a while trying to work out the best options as I had only been cycling to work and back but wanted to venture further and use routes others had previously been on . Endomondo has a tone of routes online you can get the gpx files for.

Cyclestreets.org have a free Android app that you can use to plan routes and it will even give audible turn by turn instructions as you follow the route. You can plan shortest, fastest or quietest routes. Need to be a little careful as it can take you off road, but it's a good tool and easy to use.

Another brilliant choice is the ViewRanger app.
