I ride a Dahon folding bike ( Vybe c7a model) with stock tyres.

It rides fine on smooth roads but on poor surface (still on road or footpaths) the ride is bone shaking!

Also, when I am riding over grass verges, it is very difficult to pedal.

Is there any way to improve the ride using a different tyre?

Trying not to ride a bike where it isn't meant to be would save you spending on tyres.

My folder(Tern) gives a rougher ride than my hybrid which I have always put down to wheel size. The smaller the wheel the more effect on the ride will be caused by poor surfaces.

Quite agree with morrisman, the size of the wheel in relation to the obstacle seems to have a definite effect, hence 29'er MTB riders talk about smoother ride over the same terrain as 26" riders. BMX sized wheels definitely feel rougher than 26" over the same course.
