Rollers?

Although it's not that cold here, I'm thinking of taking up a bit of indoor training. I've looked about on the web and am thinking rollers may be the way to go. I'm thinking either Elite Parabolic Training rollers or Minoura Action Roller Advance . Minoura also have a roller with magnetic resistance built in (Moz Roller ) which seemed a good price for a new roller. They will mostly be used to top up my winter miles and I like the idea of improving my form and core muscles. Any thoughts or alternative suggestions?

Probably not a bad idea, as the rollers help your upper body and core more due to you actually having to balance the bike as opposed to a trainer. Downside to this is that you can fall off, sometimes spectacularly, and hit your head on some furniture, or the floor, or a pet, or the Mrs. The recumbent trainer also plays mp4s, so I can cycle along to the accompaniement of The Danseyre by Tielman Susado. Try that with rollers. Better yet, don't . You may fall.

Yes, I can confirm that the first couple of session may -and most likely will- be tricky! BUT I also can confirm that you get a lot better workout from then rollers than a turbo.. What's your budget? I find Minoura to be the better option, especially if you can stretch a bit to the Moz?

That's not true - if anything, it's the other way round. A turbo is much better for structured and quality training. I have both, btw.

Do you need training tyres for the rollers, like you would with a TT?

Nope - your usual tyres are fine. You don't 'need' them on turbos either, incidentally...

Or just an avid watcher of people falling off rollers on YouTube?

Nope - your usual tyres are fine. You don't 'need' them on turbos either, incidentally...
Been told and advised to get the training tyres because they develop flat spots and after a significant amount of time on the trainer you can actually notice small black specs where the rubber is wearing off
 
I'm not usually on rollers for longer than 20 minutes (I use them for warming up, trackside), so tyre wear is not really an issue. On the turbo, I use an old wheel with an old road tyre, and when that tyre wears out, I've got plenty of other old tyres waiting to go on. I don't know who told you to get training tyres, but in my opinion, the problems you describe are significantly over-stated. I've never had any issues like that.
 
I have the Elite Arion rollers but I wish at the time though I had had the cash to upgrade to the resistance version. FWIW I prefer them to a turbo, they are slightly less mind numbing and it just a case of plonking the wheel on them rather than changing a skewer and or wheel/tyre. The only downside compared to the turbo is the need to balance, although I prefer that mostly :blush:
