I personally would chuck things like apple cores at the side on the grass, mainly because I hope wildlife would get something from it. Never rubbish though, I am very fussy!

I heard my step son saying he got dog poo in his face once, when cycling, so I now carry wet wipes in case that happens to me. I draw the line at that!!

When I was cycling the other day, a bus passed me with a sign saying to report people who dropped litter from a car.
I saw a bus driver drop his his sarnie packaging out of his window a couple of months ago, so I reported his bus number and time to them.

Got a polite email back a few days later: they weren't impressed by the littering, especially while driving along. They assured me that words had been had.

So, do others here have similar experiences? What are the worst areas of the country for litter? What, if anything, can we do about it?

Yes, apart from the usual rubble and potholes I notice lots of broken glass and to my amazement the other day on the A6 by westhoughton a wine bottle half busted rather dangerous which only had to be launched from a car at some point.

I'm interested to know what people think of "chucking" your fruit peelings when cycling. i have to admit that my banana peel, orange peel and apple cores all go in the nearest ditch, mainly because i don't want them in my pocket. is this a sin ????

I am all for this albeit a tad hypocritical, as long as you dont hurl it in a dangerous manner or into oncoming traffic. I stopped doing this though when I read a story about police fining, seems ironic considering the amount of tw@s that I see driving with their hand cupped over ear trying to disguise their mobile phone!

Banjo points out that one man on a bike can't clean up the country. True. But lots of people can.

By coincidence, I read a piece in The Independent yesterday about a group called Surfers against Sewage (SAS, geddit?), dedicated to cleaning up Britain's beaches. They post rubbish back to the companies it originated from, urging them to consider using biodegradable packaging. Not a bad idea - although obviously it means incurring postal costs.

but my bar wrappers and cardboard raisin boxes all come home with me

i've seen some strange litter at the side of the road, the packaging from an adult toy last week !!!!

I think banana and citrus peel are very slow to decompose. I'd probably bung them in a bag and bin them when I could. An apple core, I'd be happy to chuck.

That would be, if I liked fruit. I don't much, so it's not a problem for me.... Also, I don't tend to eat on the move anyway.

I can't think that there's anything wrong with chucking an apple core. If there was a wild apple tree all its apples would fall to the floor after all.

My pet peeve is glass bottles. I frequently stop and pick up bottles (unbroken) from the cyclepath on my daily commute. If already broken, I often stop and kick the bulk of the glass off of the path. If I don't take the time to stop and pick up the unbroken bottle, kids will find it, and intentionally break it on the path. I get enough punctures as it is, and by far, the main cause is glass.

I wish there was a LARGE deposit required on every drink container, be it glass or plastic.

If everyone cycled ... or in any way interacted with the world outside their tin cans and living-room TV counterfeit worlds there would be no litter.

Don't get me started on the incredible "road kill" carnage we witness on a daily basis ....

I was cycling along some beautiful country roads around the Mendip Hills when I stumbled across a load of old rubbish piled at the side of the road. Amongst the pile there was an old piano. Not much I could do about that one! The next time I passed that way it had gone thank goodness.

You could have looked to see if they'd dumped a stool as well, and sat down and given us a tune....:becool:

This caught my eye today

Drivers who drop litter from their cars should be penalised with a point on their licence, say campaigners.
Keep Britain Tidy says its research has shown it is a better deterrent than fines, which are already handed out.
It argues that as it is difficult to identify who has actually thrown the litter, all the blame should fall on the car owner.
The group says culprits should still face fines and even those who discard apple cores ought to be punished.
Phil Barton, the organisation's chief executive, said it should be easier to prosecute offenders who use the streets and roads as a "giant dumping ground".
"The owner should be responsible for the actions of those inside the car," he said.
"We therefore want the law to go further and see a penalty point put on the licence of those that litter from vehicles."

Talking of litter, this one is car related, a friend of mine, chucked a finished cigarette out of his car window. He was stopped and fined £50.

I don't eat bananas, back onto the cycle litter chat, but if I did, I would not throw them at the side, nor orange peelings
