Yeah I live on a hill so wherever I go is going to be uphill somewhere. I can go around the big hill and would probably manage with a compact but it's a mile longer.
Saying that the plan is to use the Roadbike in the dry so I would rarely go the shortest route to work

I can get up Highgate West Hill (1km at 10%+) on a compact Spec Allez - 100kgs and unfit. You'll be fine.

I see the Trek 1.5 2010 is out now.
I have been told the Tiagra set up is better than Sora as you can change gear on the drops.
Do you think it's worth the extra £100 over the 1.2 Sora equipped Trek ?

I have a 09 1.5, I find it fairly simple switching gears, even when on drops, maybe that's just me.

Ive a sora bike and a 105 bike (tiagra is between) for me the upgrade was good. Sora is uncomfortable and less smooth IME and like you say you can't change up on the drops. IMO the upgrade would be worth it and there'll probably be other minor upgrades too. If you can afford it get the best you can it'll be better and keep better and be more durable in the long run.

Off to order tomorrow.
Still not sure what I am after.
Don't know if they can still get a Trek 1.5 09 model or how much the 1.5 2010 model is.

Really wanted the 1.2 2010 model but there was none in my size and no-one could confirm when stock could be available.
Picked up a Trek 1.5 2010 model though. I saw the Defy 3 2010 but wasn't keen on the colourscheme or just the general feel. The Trek felt perfect as soon as I sat on it.
Went for a quick blastup the hill too and it's quick, even with the compact gearing not being as low as the triple it seems ok.
Not sure I will get up the 10% 1 mile hill but I'll just go the extra few miles around it. Might try it when I am used to riding the roadie.
Now just to decide what to do for the dark winter commutes. May just buy a decent rear light as the front torches are attached with the 2fish fittings. My Bday soon so someone can buy me a new rear light !
