Can anyone help Re Gearing.
Currently my Hybrid has Chainring 48/36/26 and 11-34 8 Speed.

The Roadbike I am looking at has Chainring 50/39/30 and 10 to 25 10 speed or there is 12-25 8 speed.

Just need to know will the Roadie be harder (Much ?) on the big hills (I normally go in 2nd gear on the hybrid which is maybe 25T ??)

I wouldn't worry the road bike will be a lot lighter/ roll better (narrower tyres) and you won't notice the slightly higher gearing.

What sort of hills? I was worried about this from 48/38/28 hybrid to my compact double racebike. It's absolutely fine, infact it's very pleasant with 10 speed. I find the roadbike easier on the hills as it rolls so much better.

It's a 10 speed Campag Xenon

Reckon all this sounds ok for a 2nd bike/introduction to road bikes ?

I was going to spend £600 but my Kona Dew Deluxe is going great on commutes so just want a 2nd bike for the nice weather (!) and just to see how it goes.

Unless you're a very poor climber (for your skillset) I think you are worrying waaaaay too much. Triple anything should be fine. Unless it's a zippy hybrid you'll get quite a big improvement in rolling. When I got my racebike (10sp) compact in April I went up a hill and thought gosh this is hard I'm having to use the bottom gear and later saw the 20% sign .

Yup. I don't regret getting a compact though. Got me up Holme Moss.

Could you please enter ANY thread about GEARING in 'Technical - Know How', as it confuses the beginner and deters them from buying a bicycle.

There are many threads about 'gearing' there and your questions should be answered within the entries of those threads.

Subjects suitable for the 'Beginners' section are ones not dissimilar to "Should I buy a pink or a blue jersey?"

Any subject which involves any sort of calculation or finger-counting goes in TECHNICAL - KNOW HOW.

Thank you.

I don't have any know how and I'm sure he'd be fine on it

P.S. Now that it was mentioned I was thinking of petitioning for Technical - Know how to be renamed to Ask Jimboalee.

You get a straight answer here though.
Just need a yes or no not any comments on the chain being titanium and that it weighs about 1000th of a gram less than a knats cock and will going with a nickel plated set up reduce the co-efficient drag of a lightweight helmet.

I have been told to stay on the 'Technical - Know How' section.

Twenty seven hours after the membership pledged to keep 'Gearing' off 'Beginners', the subject is raised again in 'Beginners'.

Which only demonstrates that the humble Beginner has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge on Gearing.

I have also been told to NOT contribute to threads in 'Beginners' that contain the word "Gear".

I'm going back to 'Technical - Know how' now.

There's a difference between giving a basic outline of gearing to beginners in terms they can understand, and writing mathematical gearing theory that would go over the heads of many a maths professor.

I don't doubt your technical ability, and am sure that many people are happy to get deeply technical about gearing - in Know How of course - but you could easily tone it down and reply in a very basic fashion in Beginners too.

For example, if a beginner asks - Will I have trouble climbing hills on my new bike because it's a double?

You could advise that having a large'ish (say 27 tooth) rear spocket as part of their cassette would help.

The same discussion in Know How would, I'm sure, be much more involved.

It's just about striking a balance, that's all, and it's not really fair to use Downward's post to aire a niggle.

Beginners - keep it simple; Know How - go as mad as you like ...

Cheers,
Shaun

What bike are you getting anyway Downward?

Hmm well it seems that either wait for the Giants or get the inflated Trek 1.2 (£675 for an entry level trek !)

This would be done via cyclescheme which saves me 25%

So either £470 for the Trek 1.2 or Decathlons Sport 2 is £260

Nothing 2nd hand out there apart from a Giant Defy 3 (06) for £300 which bear in mind it was £360 new is excessive.
