One thing to think about is if you will need to walk around in your shoes (e.g. if you are touring, you won't want to take a separate pair of shoes to wear in the evenings). If so, get the kind where the cleat is set into the sole (MTB shoes, maybe?).

For Road Bikes where walking is not an issue you need either spd-sl or Look type pedals - these have a triangular cleat attached by 3 screws so look for shoes that will accept this system(Many will also accept the 2 screw spd system as referred to above).

Sizing can be a problem re shoes - it's probably best to pay a bit over the odds and get a pair you can try on at a LBS.

Cleats are expensive - £18 a pop but you usually get a pair with new pedals so check that this is so - you need cleats with a float -each manufacturer uses a different colour to denote those with a float but Shimano is currently black/yellow

Try the shoes on before you buy, Shimano are noted for being a narrow fit (as are some others) so you may need to get a size or two larger than you would normally take...
