road racing, crits, time trials, fast training rides, fast club rides........... you will see zero people using 2-bolts systems for such riding
I see plenty people riding spd's on club rides and training rides. Racing not so much...it's nearly all 3 bolts then.

For Speedplay you can now get Keep on Kovers which make walking easier and, as the made suggests, there is no need to keep putting them on and taking them off.

The retention is much better on the three bolt systems, you are less likely to come off the pedal. For practicality, SPD pedals are great.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Those Keep on Kovers are getting a bit complicated. Why not go the whole hog and get some Pyro Platforms ;)

No need for special shoes, just your old trainers ^_^

Just to question this oft assumed plus point for SPD-SL...

Surely competitive Enduro, and XC (etc) riders demand far better retention characterisitcs due to the terrain they rider over than those simply riding on smooth tarmac? The average power outputs arevery similar, with the MTB rider's max power being delivered in far more frequent burts than those on the road

My Look Deltas hold my feet in far better than my XT SPD's. There is a much bigger contact surface.

Whoever invented the name(and spelling) "Keep on Kovers" deserves a punch up the conk.

(Me, I use 2 bolt SPDs and am very improper.)

Can anyone offer me some advise on what the best system is and offer some models that are compatible
There is no 'best system', just what suits you, your budget, and style of riding.
".............some models that are compatible" ..............with what?
The basic choice is between a system with a recessed cleat and shoes that are easy to walk in, and a system with a protruding cleat and shoes that are not quite so easy to walk in.
