I used to do an all round 18 mile commute and, like you, didn't want to use my "best bike" for it. (Although unlike you, my best bike isn't as best as yours!)

I used a Dawes Horizon touring bike for my commute. Similar enough shape to the road bike, rack and mudguards made it more practical, with 28mm tyres still fairly quick.

I use my MTB for my commute sometimes, again it's a 26" bike like yours, and it works well. I've got nobblies on as I do take it to north Wales on occasion and I'm too lazy to swap the slicks back on. If you put slicks on it'll feel like a bog standard hybrid bike, so perfect for commuting.

It's a bit harder than using the road bike, as it's heavier and has more rolling resistance, but then equally it's a different kind of ride and in it's own way more fun.

With a full suss MTB you lose a lot of your energy just bouncing the suspension up and down. If you can lock it out, whilst on tarmac, it can help.

Depends on the design of suspension as some are more efficient than others. The OP doesn't ride a full suss.
