Hello,

Ok so im not all that up on bikes, I know how my mountain bike works but if you started asking me about tyre sizes etc Im not all that clued up!

I have aquired a bike (from a relative). I feel safe in saying it is quite a good bike and it cost in excess of a grand so I need some help.. It is a road/racing bike. Im told ideally I need to buy some new tyres, and inner tubes for it (its been hung up for a while in a garage!).

So here's my question/s. Please remember im just a beginner so I would like clarification before doing anything!

The sizes I have been told to look for, for new tyres is 700c x 28 (or 30). If someone could briefly explain what that means I would appreciate it. Also, please take a look at the below link and suggest whether that would be suitable (according to the sizes ive specified above). Note that I live in the yorkshire dales and I have to say it the roads where I want to go are on road but not the best. So I thought I would get slightly thicker/wider tyres than it already has. If that is going to make any difference let me know!

The link is: http://www.cyclexpress.co.uk/products/Cross_Town_Reflect__(1_Pair)__Free_Inner_Tubes.aspx

If you think that isn't suitable if you could reply with a link to a similar tyre that would do the job I would appreciate it. (its easier for me to see pics at this stage lol!).

Finally im told I need to get matching inner tubes. How are they measured so I know the exact size I need before buying to find out ive bought the wrong ones?!?

Many thanks in advance,
Cheers, Jamie.

I suppose I would be looking for 'touring' tyres as thats what I want to do, correct?

Something like this: http://www.bonthronebikes.co.uk/102-240712

What sort of bike is it? What size are the current tyres?

You need to make sure the wheels are able to take wider tyres, and that there is space for them to fit in the frame. Some racing frames have very close clearances between the seat tube and the back tyre.

Thanks for the reply. The bike is a road/racing bike. Im assured that the bike WILL take wider tyres such as 700c x 28 or 700c x 30.

700c refers to the nominal diameter of the wheel and 18/ 25/ 28/ 32 etc to the width of the tyre in mm.

My road bike wheels will accept any width of 700c tyre up to 28 but a tyre above that size will rub on the frame. A Dawes Galaxy uses the same diameter rim and the width is similar but the frame is designed with enough clearance to accept a 32mm and mudguards.

Tubes generally fit a range of tyre widths; 700c x 25/28 or 700c x 18/23 for example. As long as your tube matches or falls between the numbers on the tyre you'll be ok.
