Have had my first decent road bike for about 3 months been on it a lot since I had it and although a wrench knew it would soon be time to put it to bed, had a fall recently chipped frame and other damage too; dont possess a winter road bike at this moment in time but possess a good hybrid which I was fully intending on using anyway, trouble is with unseasonal good weather the temptation is there but then again the gritters have been out tonight leaving lovely salt on the roads.....

Other dilema is two of your mates are going out on their road bikes but you dont want to mess yours up at this time of year is one being anti social expecting them to be slowed up with you on the slower hybrid?...... or should they respect your decision and cycle to the pace of the slower bike?.....

Opinions ?

Three weeks ago I bought a fixie to use in the winter and, 370 miles later, I'm having so much fun that I'm not missing the road bike one bit. The strange thing is that fixie not only gives a much better workout - it's also turning out to be as quick as my road bike on the hills and considerably faster on the plains. (And it's so much cheaper that I'm not nearly so paranoid about it getting nicked.) So I say go fixed and watch them struggle to keep up!

Keep riding it, slap plenty of lube all over and ride. It's a bike FFS, not the crown jewels!
Extra protection may be gained by spraying with Mr Sheen after a good wash-down or wipng over with an oily rag.

Having said that, a winter fixie is a treat.

Just got home after being out on my road bike, and will be out on it again in the morning. Apart from when there's snow and ice i intend to ride it all year round.

Got a winter bike last year for £60 of ebay , an old Townsend road bike from the 70's
Just about to build it back up and fter stripping it down this summer , had it re painted. (Work in a Door company that has a high tec paint line so why not get some proper use out of it)

Had some buckled Mavic open Pro wheels in the shed for a cpl of years so had them trued and will stick them on , more excited with my new shiny £60 quider than i am getting my number 1 bike out in spring.

Last ride on the roadie this morning (if I can bear the cold) then it goes away for the winter and the new CX bike with mudguards takes over. I've got a taxi coming at 10:30 to take me to the airport so it will need to be a quick ride.

I just keep riding my Allez; it's a choice between that and an old heavy mtb so my road bike suffers on through the winter. I just take the attitide that it's there to be ridden. Keep flirting with some mudguards but to date I just endure any muck that gets thrown up my back. Possibly will get a new bike next summer and keep the Allez as my commuter/winter bike but for now ot does it all!
