Hi,

Im looking at changing from my mountain bike with shimano m520 pedal and mt31 shoes to a road bike, with road orientated shoes and pedals.

I like that my current shoes have the cleat recessed, so normal walking is possible, if only for a short while.

The road bike shoes all swwm to have the cleat exposed (probably for lightness), but this must make walkiing extreamly difficult. Are there any road shoes that have a recessed cleat? (And if not, would I be able to use my m520 pedels on a road bike?)

Cheers

You don't get any Road cleats that are recessed. There's no harm in using your M520's they won't be quite as efficient pedalling but of the bike they are much more efficient. I've got A520's on my road bike still SPD's but IMO they look better on a road bike but that's only my opinion though. I usually use them with a pair of stiffered soled Mtb shoe (spesh BG Sports). Again they're maybe not quite as efficient in pedalling but as near as makes no difference and the ability to walk rather than waddle more than makes up for any shortcommings.

I'd keep the current pedals/shoes with winter coming up - road shoes are designed to let in ventilation and it can get a bit cold around the tootsies.

I've got m520 SPD pedals on my road bike and wear Mavic touring shoes, which have the cleat recessed:

I like the look of those!

I think I will stick with my SPDs for the moment, and look again at road orientated stuff in the spring next year when riding frequency and mileages go up.

But please do post up any bargains if you see them!

think of it this way; if you ride 50 miles and stop at a café and have to walk 20 feet from bike to table, do you by the best shoe/cleat combination for the 50 miles riding, or the 20 feet walking around the café?

with a bit of practice, road cleats are easy enough to walk in, and the newer look keo deltas and spd sl cleats have rubber bits to avoid slips on tiled floors.

racing cleats are better for road bikes period. whether the compromise that spd offers is worth it depends on how often you're off the bike. tourists like them as they often stop and have a walk about, and you can use them as proper shoes.
