It's a flat bar rigid framed bike. Normally when people talk of road bikes they mean ones with drop handlebars. A hybrid has flat bars (with a rigid fork or suspension). I'd say what you have at the moment is a hybrid
You should be able to order online into the store?
Yes i have a hybrid and looking at the options looks like my best bet is changing the tires ... the drop bars will be difficult to get used to and i have only a few months left before the event . My current bike is perfect for my london commute etc.

A pair of decent 28 or 32mm tyres and skinnier tubes will cost under £50 though
See how it goes for a few weeks on the commute with lighter, thinner tyres. How wide are current ones?
Another vote for these, have them on two bikes, 1.5"/38mm and 1.95"/50mm. Very smooth and comfortable. The 1.5s took me and my Trek steel MTB from London to Brighton, no problem.
Well if she only has £400, everything else becomes less important...regardless of size she presumably won’t be buying an £800 bike
