Someone told me uphill climbs are tougher on a road bike, than a mountain bike... as general rule, is this true?

IMO in either instance its simple
Uphill in a field or gavel path = MTB
Uphill on a road = Road bike
I used to ride to work 18 miles on a Bianchi Hardtail MTB with semi slick tires and some of the hills used to destroy me! On my Allez Elite road bike I fly up them (and I dont have a triple). I always found even with front suspension locked out there was a bit of 'give' and you lose power there, alongside this there is the weight. On the roadie it feels like every joule of energy is transformed into forward motion.

By the way, I was meaning on a road - I obviously know that riding in a field, the mountain bike would be the easier option lol.
