I use a mixture of my voice and a ping bell.

Problem with the latter is it doesn't work in the rain, although I've found my voice works in all weathers.
I had a bell like that earlier this year. I've replaced it with a chrome brrringer. Why do they even make a bell that traps water between striker and dome?

I prefer to use a bell than my voice. It seems more polite and get a better reaction.
Yes, it's an acceptable alternative, but lots of my riding is where people can't hear me over the motorists unless I shout and I've been told that I always sound angry then  so a bell seems the kinder option.

I've never owned a bike with a bell. I find that just flicking my brake levers makes enough noise to warn anyone (usually pedestrians walking three abreast along country lanes) of my presence.
The right carbon rim/ brake pad combination gives you a banshee scream that will scare the bejeesus out of anyone when you touch those levers...and the harder they make you hit the anchors the louder it is.

You should have heard my bike this morning, yes the two dog walkers in the park did look as my bike screeched down the hill till the water was no longer on the disk brakes:blush:

When I was in Cambridge, I used the occasional oily fingerprint to cultivate a really good squeal on my back brake. I could get a lot of noise with very little loss of speed. It didn't half make the peds get back on the pavement sharpish.
Here, in less congested surrounds, I use a chrome brrringer, on the same spacegrip that the GPS lives on.

Increasingly their seem to be a number of people who hearing a bell wonder whose mobile has just got a message - a great big horn is probably better!

One of the lessons I learnt on PBP this year is to fit a bell the next time. I found that shouting warnings etc that you are about to pass on the left or right etc go unheeded and it gets frustrating not being able to pass someone who does not look behind. Its either fit a bell or learn about another sixty languages, at least a "ping, ping, ping" is universally understood......hopefully.

"Unlike a traditional bike bell, you can ping your Trigger Bell while braking, turning and changing gear." So what do they think is a traditional bike bell? Mine are positioned for the usual left thumb position on all except road bikes (like the right thumb has the gear shifter) so I can ring it while braking, turning or changing gear. On road bikes, it isn't, but you can't brake or shift from all hand positions on them anyway. It looks OK but BS marketing means I'm unlikely to buy one. I don't think it'd work if you have hybrid/MTB ezfire shifters either, as the thumb has a gear shift lever.

Is anyone making a bell called "tinker bell"? Guess it would be bad for searchability.

If you watch the clip, listen to how many times she mentions safe or safety. She even tells us traditional bells are unsafe. She was brainwashing me.

Well, it turns out that it matters who's on staff at the LBS. I went in again and they sold me a Dutch bell (Widek DeciBell XL) which attaches with an O-ring, and fits my bike just fine.

That wouldn't be the one between Cherry Hinton and the bottom of Mill Rd would it? If it is then I agree you need to give warning. We almost had a collision with an idiot riding way too fast when we were on our touring bikes setting off for Harwich.

That bridge is awful. I've nearly been hit on it a few times.
