On the commute the other day, the striker broke right off my bell! It was a cheap bell that came with the bike, so I shouldn't be surprised.

Now, I know that there's some debate over whether bells belong on road bikes, but there's a bridge with two blind corners on my commute, so a bell is pretty useful.

I tried to buy a knock-off crane bell at the LBS this week, but they said it wouldn't fit road bars--in fact, they said that none of their bells would fit road bars. So, any suggestions for a road bike bell?

Get a airzound and scare the folk on the other side of the blind corner.

On the grounds that all bikes should be sold with bells, but a lot of people take them off, there must be a huge stockpile of unused bells lurking in sheds all over the country. Maybe someone could donate?

The bells my bikes have been supplied with usually aren't that robust and haven't lasted that long before they broke.

The idea of not having a bell on a roadbike is ridiculous. Its what makes the bike go faster.

Well thats my theory anyway. And you cant prove me wrong until you try it.

It's true; a bike isn't a bike without a big shiny bell. Get a big, rusting chrome one the size of a baby's head, that says 'the British Bastard' on it, or some such jingoistic slogan.

I've never owned a bike with a bell. I find that just flicking my brake levers makes enough noise to warn anyone (usually pedestrians walking three abreast along country lanes) of my presence.

If you are happy to spend some money on a work of art, what about a Lion Bell?
Mine looks like the first one - I love the sound but not keen on the mount - either it or my handlebars are not round.... sometimes it's tight to my handlebars, and other times rattles around ... I must admit I was wondering if the O ring idea up thread might solve that problem. But it does produce a lovely sound!
