Taking this thread in an arguably much better direction..are there such things as unbranded/cheap replacement gillette cartridges?

Yes, and they are fine. Provided you're not too attached to the notion of having skin on your face!

My Epsom all in one DX4400 Printer packed up today one of the 4x ink cartridges had run out.Emergency priority1 was declared

Hours of phoning around revealed a wide discrepancy in prices for the original Epsom pack of 4x cartridges.
Korma Currys £36.20
Vomet store £36.20 (surprise that )
local computer shop £25.00
PC World £24.45
Asda £21.00
ebay comapatables £1.99

Interestingly Vomet are offering a brand new 3in1 Epsom printer with cartridges for £36.00 . Work that out ??

It really does pay to shop around for prices . Don't automatically assume that your local Electrical super store are giving you the best prices ,they are probably ripping you off.
You know who you are ....shame on you

Nobody is ripping you off. If you shop around you'll get a good price on most things. If you can't be bothered to shop around then it is your fault if you pay a higher price than necessary for something, not the seller's.

I had a lexmark all in one which was cheap to buy but got through the catridges in a flash. I have now purchased a dell mono printer (off ebay so only £60 and new!) to print most of my work on, toners last ages and keep the lexmark purely for essential colour.

I have a similar strategy: HP laser on the network for quality volume printing - the cost per copy is quite low. A Samsung laser which I refill for very cheap lower quality. Lastly an Epson inkjet for expensive colour stuff. The latter hardly gets any use which is just as well given the cost. ;) Increasingly I use online print services for photos as they can work out quite good value.

Don't use compatibles on Epsons or you will be throwing the whole lot in the bin in 6 months.

I bought some compatible carts for my Epsom photo printer. The carts never worked well from the start and now the print heads are knackered.

I can second that. Maybe some are ok but the ones I've tried were terrible. I just look for good deals on genuine ones and stock up on them.

Look around early and buy a full set of the £1.99 versions well in advance. www.premierink.co.uk have kept my Epson R220 running cheaply for a coupke of years.

+1 for the last post, except I use svp.co.uk for my ink. Have the rest of you ever tried using the Jet Tec compatible carts both premierink and svp sell? I've used other compatibles before and not been too impressed, but these seem pretty good.

I've had no problems with print heads or anything and the cartridges are available at a fraction of the cost - £15-20 compared to £50+ for the multi packs. It's a no brainer.

I've given up on inkjet printers, having been through three Epsons in about five years. It may have been through using non-branded replacement cartridges but they were so unreliable and we were forever changing one or other of the cartridges to get the printer to work.

I bought a fairly cheap Samsung colour laser printer which works first time, every time, and have just changed the original black toner after one year (the colour are still working). The only disadvantage is that it doesn't print brilliantly on photo-glossy paper, not that I print many photos. If I do, I take them to the shop on a memory stick and use the machine.

Despite the initial cost of toner cartridges, the laser is working out to be far more economical than inkjet and no hassle.
