Our New neighbours (Margo and Jerry), bedecked the front of their house with bunting. I asked Jerry who the celebration was for and he replied "the Queen" At this point my ADHD beat me to it and I said "ah yes, I heard she'd died...." which apparently's a bit rude.
Anyhow, who erects bunting for a funeral?*

*apart from Margo and Jerry obvs....

I hear folk saying "I keep saying Prince, not King Charles". It's a bit different for me as when I hear someone on the radio say "King Charles the...." I get the word Spaniel in my head, instead of "Third".

This is the thing, what has occurred is a huge change for us all, The Prince of Wales is now King Charles 3rd, William & Kate are now Prince/Princess of Wales, but we are all used to the previous line up, that it is still taking some getting used to how things are now, it does seem quite strange still getting to grips with all the changes that have occurred because of the Queens passing

I’m sorry but this where we part ways. The most striking thing about the events of the past week or so is how little anything will change. The machinery of State carries in exactly as before with a new ceremonial head, replacing an inscrutable old lady with her tetchy vain son. Unless you’re a soon-to-ex employee of the new king, I struggle to see how the change will make any material difference to the lives of anyone in this country.

The most overused word this week has been “historical”. Ukraine, Jan 6 and Brexit are history. This is a timestamp dressed in spectacle.

Actually we agree, nothing with regard to what/who are in position of being head of the monarchy is going to change, as all the protocols and procedures stay the same, I was, possibly a little clumsily saying was that after 70 years of having a Queen, it seems strange referring to our King, and the other changes that have come about as a result of the Queens death, when Charles eventually dies we’re going to have to go through all of this all over again.

I don't think it'll be quite as bad, unless William identifies as Queen.

Anyway, this is less disruptive than the new cycling season. I expect it'll be May before many refer to Lotto-dstny without mentioning Soudal.

Carlton Kirby will still get them muddled up though

Interesting article here.

interview with simon schama.

https://www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/the-fantasy-behind-queen-elizabeths-reign

journalist either displaying creditable newshound questioning attitude or indulging in sustained snarkiness.

I found the bit where he seemed determined to be comforted that the queen wasn't happy particularly interesting/amusing.

Of course you could say that schama is biased - was knighted by her - but seems to/claims to know her.

Thanks for sharing. Both author and the Schama are engaged in very informed and insightful dialogue. Schama provides actual details that media ignores. And details means you show the good, bad and the ugly in a responsible way and not the clickbait and sensationalist approach as per Piers and DM.

Being a historian, he should do a book with a historical perspective so that Monarchy, the Government and the people head in the right direction with the concept of Constitutional Monarchy.

Hasn't Schama had criticism over his TV history body of work and accuracy / sensationalism in the past? Or something like that, a loss of respect from his academic colleagues.

All this talk of linking spaniels with Charles new title I'm surprised nobody mistakes him for someone with an impolite word to replace the third. It's so obvious I suppose it's not needing to be said.
