I've just learned of the death of an acquaintance of mine, 'Jungle' an ex-Hell's Angel from Darlington. He was a man to be feared by those who didn't know him but was loved by those who did. He was one of Darlington's leading characters but had quietened down in recent years

Jungle looked formidable, not to mention oily and in very serious need of a haircut. Beneath that unappealing exterior, black clad and bearded, lay something rather different.

His last appearance before the town’s magistrates – possession of cannabis, personal use, March 1997 – coincided with Red Nose day. Law of the Jungle, he turned the short journey to the court into a sponsored walk, wore a plastic nose, raised a few quid and then tapped the judicial staff for much more. “I went upstairs to pay the first instalment of my fine and came down with a bag of money for the kids,” he said.

RIP Big Fellah.

Sounds like a real character and the mould was broken when he was turned out

Hi Vernon.

I'm from Darlington and I recall Jungle & the Angels around town in the 1970's when I was growing up. One abiding memory of him was down at the Broken Scar picnic area (a weir on the River Tees) one hot summer day (may be the legendary summer of '76). I remember him and another mate walking waist deep into the water, still in full leathers, to let their dog have a swim and then splashing each other like big kids.
