I listened to his R1 Rock Show for the last few years, he was excellent and his last shows very good. He did a special as well with his wife (who was also his carer) and it was excellent. RIP.

A genuinely lovely man, I loved his radio shows, not surprised to hear of his passing, he was very ill. But still sad news.

I wondered why he didn't stay until the end of the year. He knew something that we didn't.
According to the BBC breathing difficulties. I think he chose to go out on a high, rather than drag his career out as his health deteriorated too far, forcing a retirement.

He could have done that on purpose. He was born Peter Dingley.

Turns out pirate stations used fake DJ names and even fake accents to avoid identification and hassle from the authorities back home.

The owner would send out cartridges with jingles pre-recorded with a selection of such fake handles, and rather than it being a choice it was simply happenstance that he was given jingles with the name Johnnie Walker and told to get on with it, and it stuck. He was later to joke that he could easily have ended up as Jim Beam or Glen Fiddich.
