Great fellow. He wrote a fantastic book of poetry a few years ago, "Sentenced to Life", ending with a piece about a tree his daughter bought for him to plant in the courtyard. It appeared the tree was to be a memorial to his death, but he lived on four more years. A man of courage and wit, and not a great advert for fags, sadly

Sad loss, will aim to read some of his work which is by all accounts extremely insiteful. He had a gift for combining harsh critique with humour, tough gig but he pulled it off.

He was ill a long time. I seem to remember he made his own translation of Dante's Inferno. I have not read it; I'm sure it's good. I read his Unreliable Memoirs book when I was young, which was hilarious but filthy. His TV shows in the 80's were hilarious. I did not approve of his Climate Change skepticism, but other than that...
